Biografia

Biography of António Damásio.

António C. R. Damásio is a Portuguese neurologist. António was born February 25, 1944, in Lisbon. His wife, Hanna Damásio is a doctor and a neurologist and works with him.

He is a great expert of the brain operation and he studied the diseases like Alzheimer and Parkinson.
António Damásio studied medicine in the University of Lisbon, in 1974. He worked on Department of Neurology of the University Hospital of Lisbon. When António finished his studies, he traveled to USA . He stayed in USA during 6 months as a visiting researcher, in the Alphasia Research Center in the city of Boston. Norman Geschwind, a man considered the father of modern behavorial neurology in America, was looking after António's jobs. Now, António is director and teacher in the Department of Neurology in the University of lowa and is teacher in Salk's Institute in La Jolla (California).
António wrote some books too. Descarte's Error: Emotion, Reason, and the Human Brain, in 1994. The Feeling of What Happensa: Body and Emotion in the Making of Consciousness,  in 1999. Looking for Spinoza: Joy, Sorrow, and the Feeling Brain, in 2003. The person within: the mental self , in 2003. Self Comes to Mind: Constructing the Conscious Brain,  in 2010. His books are about the relationship between feelings and emotions and their bases in the brain.

António won some awards :The Arnold Pfeffer (2002), Reenpaa in Neuroscience (2000) , Plasticité Neuronale (1997) and Premio Príncipe de Asturias de Investigación Científica y Técnica (2005). 
 
He is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and of the American and European academies of Arts and Sciences. He is member of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Belgium too.
